I wanted to add a little color to my usual white kitchen towels and thought I could make an after school project with my kids that wouldn’t take up too much time. We have an annual tradition at Christmastime to make our cards and they are always intricate and carved although beautiful, I was looking for something quick and easy. Many household objects can be used and it is amazing what you might consider spreading fabric ink on to create an interesting design. But we chose to make a stamp from potatoes.
Potatoes are soft enough to cut into and create easy shapes but also could be carved ornately as well. I like geometric shapes and have plenty of cookie cutters so the decision was easy, circles and rectangles were it. Fabric paints are readily available and come in many different colors. Deciding on the color can be just simply your favorites or you could explore ways of making new colors when two colors over lap. Mixing colors can result in new shades and doesn’t have to be complicated, just start playing with the colors and have fun being surprised.
